Urban Sketching

Group at Manchester Museum

Urban Sketchers started online as a Flickr group in 2007 and later became a non-profit organisation. Its mission is to raise the artistic, storytelling and educational value of location drawing, promoting its practice and connecting people around the world who draw on location where they live and travel.

I stumbled upon Urban Sketchers in 2011 soon after I started sketching the area of southern France where I lived. Sharing my sketches online opened up a whole new world and brought me into contact with a supportive international community of sketchers, who range from professional artists, graphic designers and architects to enthusiastic amateurs who just love to draw.

Offline in the real world, Urban Sketchers is organised into regional chapters which meet regularly to socialise and sketch together in villages, towns and cities worldwide. I am an active member of Manchester Urban Sketching Group, which proudly hosted the 7th International Urban Sketchers Symposium in July 2016.

In 2015 myself and fellow local artist Richard Clare formed Saddleworth Sketchers, which meets once a month in a different part of this charming semi-rural community on the west side of the Pennines.
